Sony released the latest Walkman at a premium price. This is inversely proportional to Apple burying its pride iPod. Sony recently upgraded its Signature Series Walkman generation with two models. The NW-WM1AM2 is priced at $1400 and the WM1ZM2 is $3700. The WMZM2 model has a body that is wrapped in gold.

This isn’t the first time Sony has released a fantastically priced Walkman. In 2016, Sony debuted the Signature Walkman Series with two models at once. They sell for $1200 and $3200, respectively. It seems that through its newest signature product, Sony wants to place the Walkman as a premium audio device.

The two latest Walkman models run on Android 11 OS, which makes them able to run various music streaming applications. Including Amazon Music, Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, and Deezer. But what makes this Walkman different from other portable music player devices? Sony claims the latest DSEE Ultimate technology has an algorithm that allows music to be compressed properly. Even optimally capable of increasing the quality of CD-class audio with a higher resolution.

Various high-resolution and lossy formats can run on this device, such as DSD, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, MP3, WMA, AAC, HE-AAC, and MQA. Even the previous model also allows users to be able to listen to music in high quality in the Master Collection in the Tidal application.

Uniquely, this Walkman also features a Vinyl Processor. Claimed to be able to deliver a sound as warm as the Vinyl character by producing low-frequency resonance. However, Sony has removed support for aptX HD which is capable of playing high-quality music via Bluetooth devices.

In terms of appearance, this device is similar to a touch screen phone with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and has a span of 5 inches. For the duration of playing music, this device is claimed to be able to stay tuned for up to 40 hours and 30 hours for wireless playback. It’s just that, from the storage side, this Walkman has a capacity of 128GB and 256GB, respectively. Not much different from the version released in 2016. Sony said if this device became available on the market on June 13, 2022.
