Huawei and Leica have been working together since 2016. At that time Huawei released the P9. However, now reportedly their cooperation will end soon after Huawei released the Huawei P50.
Leica Want To Work With Sharp?
This news comes from the @RODENT950 account, which states that the Huawei P50 will be Huawei’s last smartphone to use a camera from Leica. In a different tweet, he also mentioned that the cooperation between Huawei and Leica has now changed. According to him, the collaboration between the two was initially at the hardware and software stages. However, now the cooperation has “passed down class” to be limited to branding.
If this is true, then it can be assumed that the P50 series no longer accepts input related to hardware or software from Leica. It’s just the Leica label that has been on the Mate and P series of Huawei smartphones. In addition, Leica is currently looking for other companies to work with. Reportedly, the company is Sharp. This is based on a rendering of the Aquos R6 smartphone that recently appeared with the Leica logo. It’s just not known whether this will be a long-term collaboration or just for one device.
Apart from Sharp, Leica is also eyeing two other smartphone companies, namely Xiaomi and Honor. This cooperation may not be exclusive, in other words, Leica can collaborate with several brands at once. The same thing was done by Zeiss who collaborated with Nokia and Sony at the same time. Zeiss is currently working with Vivo for its newest smartphone, the X60 series.
The end of the collaboration between Huawei and Leica is certainly quite unfortunate. Because several generations of Huawei’s flagship smartphones since the P9 have indeed had satisfying quality. However, the US government continues to press Huawei through various kinds of blocks, it seems natural that Leica is looking for another partner.
